Clickbankbuddy serves ads to your page pretty much like AffiliateSensor and CBRssFeeds. But the free version is still better than the latter two.

Full Version

This review does not include the full (paid) version, so it will not be as well covered. One of the main advantages of the full version of Clickbankbuddy is that it can serve ads from your own database, not just ClickBank. In addition, the full version can also rotate ads for your own websites, as well as websites with which you are affiliated. The ad block will automatically include a link to clickbankbuddy.com, which allows you to earn 50% commissions for purchases made through that link. You can enable or disable a link to your marketplace, as well as the link to clickbankbuddy.com

The full version also provides additional scripts for affiliate management, membership site management, a download protector, and a couple cute doodad scripts for "spinning popups" and "cursor" ads. (Not to put them down - well, okay, we're putting them down. They very likely work as advertised, but do we really need more popups, and ads that follow your cursor around?)

Free Version  (available here)

The free version works just like the full version, with several important differences. First, the free version does not have a customizable database, so you're limited to ClickBank products; there's no way to insert ads for your own sites or affiliate sites. The link to clickbankbuddy will take the visitor away to clickbankbuddy.com, but you won't be able to earn commissions from it. And finally, there are no additional scripts.

But for the beginner, this is not necessarily a bad thing: if you don't know what a tool is for, or how to use it, why pay for it? As you gain experience you'll learn about those things.

Download and Setup

After signing up for clickbankbuddy, you will download a zip file which contains four cgi files, and an html help file. The help file links you back to the actual help file on clickbankbuddy.com. Once the zip file is downloaded, extract the files to a folder, open the instructions.html file in a browser, and follow the instructions.

Four steps to Showing Ads

The first step is to configure the variables.cgi script: This is simply inserting your website's domain name in the variables.cgi script to indicate where the other scripts reside.

The second step is to upload the cgi files to your host. It might be a good idea to provide a special directory for these scripts; just remember they must all reside in the same directory.

Third, set file permissions on the four cgi files to allow the host to execute the scripts. (UNIX-type operating systems will not let just anyone read, write or execute any file without the owner's permission.)

Finally log into the admin panel and generate your ad code and search box code, edit templates and preferences, and generate your Clickbank database. Copy the generated script to your HTML file and upload it to your website. We recommend you create and save a file containing the values you set in the admin panel. Next time you log in to the admin panel to make a change, you'll have to start over.

ClickBankBuddy advises you to contact your host to to see if their perl executable is in the usual /bin directory. (We simply continued on, assuming the host had put things where they belong. If it's not there, the scripts will fail, and then you can go bug the host.)

Adding Clickbankbuddy to Other Websites

If you decide to add clickbankbuddy to another website, you must repeat the setup at that site: modify and upload the cgi files, set file permissions, log into admin.cgi and configure your preferences for that site.

  • Positives
    • The admin panel does a good job of giving you a good looking ad block. There may not be a 216-color chart from which to choose colors, but the various pieces can be set to values to match or complement your site's colors. (Quick update from our readers -- ClickBankBuddy does have a color chart!)
  • Negatives
    • You can't save configurations. Whenever you log into the admin panel to make a change to the configuration, you must start with default values and re-enter your own values. You need to keep the admin panel open while you make changes, copy the script, paste to HTML code, upload that and test, until it looks the way you want. This information should be stored somewhere.
    • Search Box jumps to another page and flashes a banner at you. Hopefully the paid version behaves better...
