CBProsense is another way to augment your Adsense pages. A six-month subscription is $69.95, and one year is $89.95.

As usual, the first thing you need is a ClickBank ID. Once you log in, you will be taken to the "clicks & impressions report" page.

You'll see a report which starts with your ClickBank ID, when it expires, and the number of impressions and clicks you've received. There is a reload report button, probably to watch the numbers of clicks and impressions go up. There is an accounts settings section with a single checkbox to select whether your ad block will include the "Links by CBProsense.net" text, and then a button to save that.

At the top of this page you have four useful links: Ad Builder, Generic Code, Search Box Code, and FAQ. (Not that the "Contact Us" link isn't useful, it's just something that's so common it's barely bobbing above the noise until you really really need it.)

Ad Builder and Generic Code

These are the two ways to build an ad block. Ad Builder will provide you with text boxes, drop-down menus and pop-up color pallettes to create the script. This is probably the way to create an ad the first time through. Once you see the result, you will understand you don't really need Ad Builder; you can modify the "Generic Code" directly.

The values you entered in the Ad Builder are simply incorporated into a javascript template, where Ad Builder menu and textbox entries are inserted into the proper variable position. Once that's done, the user can simply edit the script to modify the values.

Note that this also means when you want to make a change in the appearance, format or content of your ad block, you must edit the script in the HTML file and upload the change to your website. No dynamic changes are possible.

Inline vs Online Javascript

Maybe you can't avoid editing and uploading, but it's also possible to only edit and upload the configuration code as a javascript file. You can create a text file that is almost identical to the output of the Ad Builder and upload it to your host, and then in the space you'd display the ad block, write a single line of javascript that points to the online file.

The possible advantages of this could be:
a) separate the ads from the webpage - don't require the user to touch their HTML code, or
b) provide multiple ad formats and keyword settings - select one by changing one line of HTML code.
There is a link at the top of this page to check out this feature.

Horizontal vs Vertical Blocks

Script variables don't actually accommodate an ad block that's specifically horizontal or vertical. If you use the default 640H by 150V dimensions, each ad will be displayed on its own line, because each ad will consist of less than 100 characters. If you use our usual 160 by 500 format, the ads are displayed vertically, with the text wrapped, and each ad is still limited to less than 100 characters.

Search Box

CBProsense has a search box option, which is shown here. It consists of a variable-size box and a "Find" button. When you enter a term and click "Find" you're sent to another window (you can select same page or new page). We really prefer the CBPlugin way of displaying search results. If you want the searchbox, just click on the CBProsense.net link to it.

One variable in the code specifies the length of the box, can range from 15 to 40 (you can put approximately 40 characters in a size 40 box). You can type multiple words in the search box, separated by spaces, and results will usually include both words. For example, using "adsense," "adsense money" and "money" do give you different results.

Another is the box shape variable. This can be 1 through 4. "1" will put the "Find" button on the left side of the box; "2" will put the button on the right side; "3" puts the button on the right side, right above the box, and "4" puts it on the right side, below the box. You can specify the minimum commission, from 0% to 75%; you can provide your own header logo, leave the header blank or use their header.

There is a variable to allow you to specify whether to open a new window for search results or use the same window: it doesn't appear to work; the results page always comes up in the same window.

Finally you can specify a "seed" search term (we chose "adsense" because cbprosense appears at the top of the list of results).

Along Comes the Spider

A surprising change from previously reviewed products is that CBProsense doesn't provide menus to select categories and sub-categories. Instead CBProsense will spider your site to find relevant keywords with which to select product ads. In addition, there is a 16th variable called "keyword_assit" (which we think is a miss-spelling). Here, you can optionally enter a space-delimited string of keywords to assist the spider.

Filters

Product ads are filtered three ways:

  • You can set a minimum commission rate (in percentage) for displayed ads.
  • You can specify keywords on your page that the spider should ignore.
  • You can specify keywords that must not appear in an ad's title or description.

There is also a FAQ at the site that comprehensively explains each of the variables in the Javascript. The FAQ also points out that the CBProsense ad block does not conflict with Google's Terms of Service, though this was not tested.

  • Positives
    • Very easy and simple ad block configuration page.
    • Javascript can be edited to modify configuration.
    • Your site is spidered for relevant keywords; keywords can also be added to Javascript.
    • Products can be filtered by keywords or commission rate.
    • ad block configuration can be separated from you HTML code
  • Negatives
    • Ads are truncated to 100 characters or less.
    • No accommodation for specifically horizontal or vertical ad blocks; ad text is simply wrapped when forced into a vertical slot.
    • No dynamic format changes; user must edit script and upload changes.
    • It is not possible to change font size.
    • Only one ad block allowed per page.
    • Must tweak ad block length to prevent truncation of ad text
