CBPlugin is the first product reviewed we actually paid for. While it has its problems like all the others, it is definitely a step up. The very first thing that jumps out is, once you have the code inserted into your website, you don't have to change it! Just log into cbplugin.com and make any changes you need, and they show up on your web page. There are no cgi files to maintain or upload.

This service provides several options: vertical and horizontal ad blocks, category-only listings, search box, and "best selling." All of these are shown here, except the category-only. Downloadable files include a four-page quick-start guide, and five other files (which won't be covered here).

Once you've ordered and paid and paid for the product, you go to the signup page where you provide your account information, including ClickBank ID (as always, if you don't have one, you can sign up here. Once that's done, you're sent to the control panel.

The control panel provides many options: create ad block code, alter your account information, contact support, pick up your bonuses, read their FAQ, etc. Other things not currently reviewed here are the "recommended product" and the "bestsellers" pages. There is also a link to a search box to search affiliate programs and sort them by commission level; at this writing it doesn't seem to be working.

To create the adblock code, click on "Create Plugin Code," and you'll be brought to the ad block configuration screen. This page is a little busy with drop-down menus and text boxes and bold red.single-letter codes beside each. There's a lot of information to deal with all at once. One of the really important things to grasp immediately are those codes adjacent to each menu or box. These codes identify the type of script (referred to as plugins) you're trying to build.

Near the bottom of the page is a legend that gives you meaning of each letter: A for all plugins, T for text ad, S for search, etc. (By the way, their quick start guide doesn't provide the codes or legend!)

So as you fill out the different fields, not all of them will apply to the ad block you're trying to build. If, for example, you're building a vertical block of text ads, you start at the top with "Plugin Type," and work down, paying attention to "A" and "T" codes to set up those that are relevant to all plugins, and especially text ads.

After you get through all that, at the bottom is a "generate" button, which takes what you entered and create a piece of javascript, which appears in the box at the bottom of the page. Right above that box you'll also notice a short description of the plugin you just configured, and links that allow you to preview the block, edit the configuration, or delete it. You'll see an Ad number. This number shows up in the script, and uniquely identifies your ad to CBPlugin.com.

Copy the script and past it into your HTML code, upload and test. If you need to tweak it a little (or a lot - for example, change a search term) you log back into CBPlugin.com. At the bottom of the page you will find that very same code. Simply click on edit and the menu and text configuration boxes are pre-loaded with the configuration.

Every time you click on "Create Plugin Code" you actually create a new script that will be displayed at the bottom of the page along with any previous scripts. So if you have several pages with these ad blocks, each one can be a different ad number. When you log into cbplugin.com, you will not only see all the scripts that are employed on your pages, but you also get the number of views. So you have a minimal report on the number of times each page has been accessed.

  • Positives:
    • For text ads, you can modify formatting, categories and search terms without having to modify your website code
    • Multiple text ad formats can be saved at cbplugin.com; tagged with a reference number; can be recalled for editing
  • Negatives:
    • Saved ad formats not available for search box or "Recommended Products"
    • Can't modify font size for search results
    • limited format control over text ad blocks.
    • limited to five text ads. (but is this really a negative?)
    • IFRAME font is not adjustable. And it's an IFRAME, so you must accommodate your page for the size of the page you're framing, which (for this test anyway) is about 220px. IFRAME is used for search box, "Best Seller" panel and Category (the last not shown here).
    • Searchbox width not adjustable; if you specify less than 250 pixels, you may get an horizontal scrollbar. Searchbox also appears to default to 30 ads per block, causing a vertical scrollbar to appear.
